Weather Slows N.D. Pea Seeding

VANCOUVER - May 12/14 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's field pea crops continues to make relatively good progress in the United States.

Initial seeding progress was reported in North Dakota, while seeding is over two-thirds complete in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and Montana.

Progress in North Dakota is well below average for this time of year, while field pea seeding is advancing more quickly than normal in Montana, Washington and Idaho.

Cool and wet weather across North Dakota delayed fieldwork even further, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Statewide, only 1.6 days were suitable for fieldwork.

Average temperatures were 4 to 8 degrees below normal over much of the state with soil temperatures ranging from 38 to 45 degrees. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 0% very short, 1 short, 66 adequate, and 33 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 0% very short, 1 short, 78 adequate, and 21 surplus.
