Acreage, Yield Risks Jump With Snow Storm

VANCOUVER Apr 30/13 - SNS -- April finished with a hammer, with what may be the last snow storm of the season blanketing much of Saskatchewan.

Forecasters are looking for temperatures to soar into the high teens and low 20s in some parts of the province by the May 5, suggesting that accumulated snow will melt quickly. With summer-like weather quickly following winter-like weather, worries about localized flooding have returned.

Looking at the condition of their fields, some farmers are starting to say that the only thing is in doubt this year is how much land they will not seed. Modern machinery can plant large tracts of land each day. But a growing number of farmers have so much land to seed that they can no longer afford to keep losing prospective planting days.

Markets do not appear to be responding to the situation. Part of the reason is that farmers were not able to seed much land in April during the last two years, making this year's delays feel normal.
