Larger N.A. Dry Bean Supply

VANCOUVER - Mar 29/13 - SNS -- The North American dry edible bean supply outlook for the balance of the 2013 and the first half of 2014 became much clearer with the release on the USDA's seeding intentions report.

Farmers in the United States intend to plant 1.5 million acres of dry edible beans and chickpeas this year, down from 1.74 million last year. Land in chickpeas is expected to rise slightly from 207,900 to 214,300 acres, with the result net area in dry edible beans will drop 16% to 1.286 million acres.

If state-level yields are at their recent five-year average, this year's dry edible bean harvest in the United States could reach 1.016 million metric tons (MT), down from 1.297 million last year; while chickpea output could rise 4.7% at almost 152,800 MT.
