Major Drop in Lentil Area

WASHINGTON - Mar 28/13 - SNS -- The failure of lentil markets to meet the expectations of growers in the United States could result in a major decline in seeded area this year, according to the USDA's seeding intentions estimates for 2013.

As it stands, farmers now intend to cut area 28% to 335,000 acres, down 28% from 2012.

Prospective plantings are down in all four estimating program States. Montana's anticipated area is down 41% from 2012, while North Dakota growers expect to plant 12% fewer acres than a year ago.
