Firm Tone In Field Peas

VANCOUVER - Mar 15/13 - SNS -- Field pea markets maintained their firm tone through the past week, helped by the realization bulk exports from Canada have pulled ahead of last year.

Unofficial Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) data suggests bulk conventional shipments through the end of February could be up 14% over last year at 1.47 million metric tons in the August through February period. This implies feed pea use is less than implied by the December 31 stocks in all positions report.

Markets were also helped by indications that canola acreage will remain high in western Canada this year, despite complaints by farmers last fall. farmers are reporting difficulty obtaining planting seed in some locations in western Canada.
