South Africa Intends to Raise Bean Area

VANCOUVER - Jan 24/13 - SNS -- Farmers in South Africa will plant more beans this year, according to the first summer crop cycle seeded area estimates released by the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

If farmers manage to seed as many beans as seems likely, land in dry edible beans will increase 9.3% to 43,450 hectares. This is a modest increase from the recent five year average 42,670 hectares.

Average yields would see production rise 14% from 47,695 to 54,400 metric tons (MT), but only 2% above the previous five-year average harvest of 53,587 MT.
