Jump in Mustard, Rapeseed Output

WASHINGTON - Jan 11/13 - SNS -- Production of mustard and rapeseed in the United States increased sharply in 2012, according to the USDA's final crop report for 2012.

Mustard seed production for 2012 increased 91% from last year to 29.9 million pounds. Planted area, at 51,100 acres, is up 120% from 2011. Harvested area, at 49,700 acres, is up 128% from last year. The average yield, at 602 pounds per acre, is 116 pounds below last year's yield and is the second lowest yield on record.

Rapeseed production increased 64% from last year to 4.63 million pounds. Growers planted 2,200 acres of rapeseed in 2012, an increase of 700 acres from last year. Harvested area, at 2,100 acres, is up 800 acres from last year. The average yield is 2,205 pounds per acre, up 28 pounds from last year and the highest yield since records began in 1991.
