Second Smallest Safflower Crop

WASHINGTON - Jan 11/13 - SNS -- The 2012 U.S. safflower crop came in at 179 million pounds, is up 6% from 2011 but is the second lowest production since records began in 1991, according to the USDA's final crop report for 2012.

Growers planted 169,800 acres in 2012, an increase of 30% from last year's record low planted area. Harvested area, at 160,100 acres, is up 26% from the previous year. The yield, at 1,121 pounds per acre, decreased 212 pounds from 2011 and is the second lowest yield on record.
