Rabi Planting Wrapping, Speculators Ramping Up

VANCOUVER - Dec 21/12 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's rabi or winter season pulse crops picked up in India during the past week, narrowing the gap between this and last year's seeding progress.

As of December 21, India's farmers had planted 12.826 million hectares of pulses, down from 13.418 million at this time last year. As a result the gap between this and last year narrowed from 847,000 to 592,000 hectares. Improved seeding progress also brought area almost to the recent average for this time of year of 12.837 million hectares.

By this time, farmers in India have normally planted 89% of their rabi season pulses and 86% of all crops. The implication is that it remains more likely that total pulse area will be around average, but down from last year. Seeding typically wraps up around the middle of January.
