Pea Number Smaller Than Hoped

VANCOUVER - Aug 22/12 - SNS -- Field pea plantings in western Canada did not rise as much as first thought, according to the first official crop estimate of the year from Statistics Canada.

Total seeded area ended up at 3.215 million acres, up from 2.328 million last year. In its June seeded area estimates, Statistics Canada said farmers planted 3.495 million acres.

The drop in seeded area will have a material impact on the quantity of peas available for sale in the coming months and next year's prospective ending stocks. That will likely disappoint consumer buyers in China and India.

Based on its survey of farmers during the last week of July, Statistics Canada said the crop will likely come in at 2.98 million metric tons (MT), a solid improvement over last year's 2.12 million MT harvest.
