Faster Kharif Seeding Progress in Past Week

VANCOUVER - Aug 17/12 - SNS -- India's farmers seeded more pulses than normal during the past week, in response to a significant improvement in monsoon rainfall levels.

Farmers managed to seed almost 1.1 million hectares of pulses during the past week, compared to recent average of 505,000 hectares.

Land in pulses now totals 8.532 million hectares, compared to 9.933 million at this time last year, 10.584 million in 2010 and 8.809 million in 2009. Normally, 89% of all the kharif season pulses that will be planted, have been planted by the start of the second week of August.
