Field Peas Remain Firm

VANCOUVER - Aug 11/12 - SNS -- Canadian field pea markets maintained their firm tone through the past week as the 2012-13 export campaign gets underway.

Harvest activity was reported in parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan, with farmers delivering product into the primary elevator system.

Some areas are reporting initial pea yields of around 1,800 pounds per acre or 2017 kilograms per hectare. It is not unusual for initial, yield and quality reports to be below what will become the average for the season.

On the other hand, processors in southern Alberta are reporting yields closer to 50 bushels per acre or 3363 kilograms per hectare on some early fields.
