Seeding Leaps Forward in Saskatchewan

REGINA - May 17/12 - SNS -- A week of warm temperatures and dry weather allowed seeding to surge forward in Saskatchewan and largely ended chatter about not being able to finish planting this year's crops because of wet soils.

The week started with 22% of all crops in the ground, well ahead of the recent five-year average of 18% complete, but lagging the kind of seeding progress recorded between 2007 and 2009, when between 23% and 31% of all crops were in the ground by the middle of May.

Saskatchewan Agriculture said, "Significant seeding progress was made during the past week. (So far) 14% of the crop is seeded in the southeast, 42% in the southwest, 12% in the east-central area, 17% in the west-central area, 21% in the northeast and 28% in the northwest.

"Provincially, 58% of the field peas have been seeded, 40% of the lentils, 25% of the durum, 23% of the spring wheat, 18% of the canola, 18% of the chickpeas and 2% of the flax."
