India Expects 17.28 MMT Pulse Harvest

DELHI - Feb 3/12 - SNS -- Higher minimum support prices (MSP) helped retain farmer interest in plantings pulses during India's rabi or winter cropping cycle, with the result total pulse production in 2011-12 will not fall as much as initially feared.

In its second crop estimate for 2011-12 season, India's agriculture department pegged combined kharif and rabi season crop output at 17.28 million metric tons (MT). This is down 5.3% from last year's 18.25 million MT harvest, but up 13.1% from the recent five-year average of 15.274 million MT.

Total foodgrain production for 2011-12 is now forecast to reach 250.42 million MT, up from 232.07 million MT last year. This is 18.35 million MT higher than 2010-11. Wheat production is expected to reach 88.31 million MT, pulses 17.28 million MT and cotton 34.09 million bales (of 170 kg. each) this year.
