Russia Harvested More Pulses in 2011

VANCOUVER - Jan 28/12 - SNS -- Russia's pulse harvest was up significantly in 2011, advancing from 1.4 to 2.45 million metric tons (MT) as yields returned to normal levels and seeded area expanded in response to strong domestic and export markets.

The improvement was part of a general increase in field crop production levels in Russia. According to the Russian State Statistical Service (Rosstat), the country harvested 93.9 million MT of grains and pulses in 2011, 54% more than in drought-affected 2010.

This huge increase was almost entirely yield-related, notes the U.S. agricultural attache for the country, as planted area increased by only 1% from 2010 to 43.6 million hectares, and remained below the 10-year average of 45.1 million hectares. Wheat production increased to 56.2 million MT, up 36% and barley production has more than doubled to reach 16.9 million MT. However, this is only 3% higher than the 5-year average. The corn crop matched the 2008 record of 6.7 million MT.
