Peas Start 2012 on Quiet Note

VANCOUVER - Jan 6/12 - SNS -- Field pea markets are starting the 2012 calendar year on a relatively quiet note, with exporters reporting limited buying interest.

India's farmers are in the final stages of planting this season's rabi or winter season crops, with total seeded area now 1.5% behind last year at an estimated 56.883 million hectares, according to the latest seeded area update from the country's agriculture department.

Pulses have been sown in 14.066 million hectare as against 14.238 million last year. "The area under gram (or chickpeas) which is a dominant pulse crop of rabi season has been reported at 8.722 million hectare against 9.277 million hectare during the corresponding period last year," the agriculture department said.
