India's Rabi Seeding Nears End

VANCOUVER - Jan 6/12 - SNS -- India's farmers are in the final stages of planting this season's rabi or winter season crops, with total seeded area now 1.5% behind last year at an estimated 56.883 million hectares, according to the latest seeded area update from the country's agriculture department.

Land in each major crop category is down from this time last year, with oilseeds showing the biggest percentage decline, down 5.3% at 8.096 million hectares. Pulses are showing the next largest percentage decline, down 1.2% at 14.066 million hectares; while land in grains is off 0.7% at 34.721 million hectares.

Discussing progress during the past week, India's agriculture department said total wheat acreage is 80,000 hectares higher than the area sown during the corresponding period last year. Higher coverage has been reported from Madhya Pradesh (432,000 hectare), Rajasthan (301,000 hectare), Jharkhand (58,000 hectare), Chhattisgarh (16,000 hectare) and Bihar (8,000 hectare).
