Rabi Seeding Pace Quickens

DELHI - Nov 26/11 - SNS -- The pace at which farmers are planting this year's rabi or winter season crops has picked up, asserts India's agriculture department, though overall seeding progress is only up 0.4% from this point last year.

Pulses are the only field crop grouping for which acreage planted so far during this rabi season is up over last year. At 9.294 million hectares planted so far, land in pulses is up 5.7% over last season.

By contrast, land in oilseeds is down 0.4% from this time last year at 6.57 million hectares sown so far; while land in coarse and cereal grains is down 2% from this time last at 16.33 million hectares.

India's agriculture department said land in wheat is down because "late harvesting of kharif paddy crop in Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh and also non-receipt of information from some sub divisions of Uttar Pradesh. However, sowing of wheat is gradually picking up and higher area has been reported from Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat."

Oilseed plantings is also picking up, with higher area coverage has been reported from West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
