India's Winter Pulse Seedings Leap Forward

VANCOUVER - Nov 11/11 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's rabi or winter season pulses is making excellent progress, with pulse plantings jumping 22.3% above last year to 4.5 million hectares so far this year.

By contrast, land in oilseeds is barely changed from last year, inching up 0.9% to 5.045 million hectares as of November 11; while land in grains and rice is down 13.6% at 2.579 million hectares.

India's agriculture department notes water reserves are good. "Reservoir storage position is quite comfortable. According to Central Water Commission reports, total live storage in 81 major reservoirs in different parts of the country as on 9.11.2011 was 118.07 Billion Cubic Meters (BCM) as against 98.42 BCM, the average of last 10 years. Storage was 4.83 BCM more than last year and 19.65 BCM more than the average of last ten years' storage capacity.

"The current year's storage is nearly 104 % of the last year's storage and 120 % of the average of last ten years. There are 74 reservoirs with more than 80 % storage, 3 reservoirs between 51% and 81% storage."
