62% Plunge in U.S. Pea Harvest

WASHINGTON - Nov 9/11 - SNS -- Field pea production in the United States collapsed 62% from last year to just 5.39 million cwt (100 pound units) or 244,625 metric tons (MT), according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.

Planted area fell by 390,000 acres, or 52%, from a year ago. Area for harvest, at 349,800 acres, is 51% below a year ago. If realized, these will be the lowest planted, harvested, and production totals since 2003. Average yield is forecast at 1,542 pounds per acre, down 457 pounds from last season.

In North Dakota, planting began the beginning of May, three weeks behind last year due to massive flooding and extremely wet conditions in the growing areas. Planting was complete by July 10, about six weeks behind last year.
