India's Rabi Season Planting Starts

DELHI - Nov 4/11 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's rabi or winter season crops is getting underway in India, with some progress reported in parts of the country during the past week.

India's agriculture department says, "According to preliminary reports, oilseeds have been sown in 3,275,000 hectare area as on November 4, 2011. Compared to last year, higher area coverage has been reported from Rajasthan. Pulses have been cultivated in 848,000 hectare."

Just one week into the rabi season, it is important not to try to draw any conclusions by year over year changes in seeding progress.
