Crop Report Supports Peas

VANCOUVER - Aug 26/11 - SNS -- Market sentiment in field peas and chickpeas was offered support by the latest crop production estimates from Statistics Canada, which revealed farmers were unable to plant as much of each crop as planned.

Initial seeded area estimates are 8.5% below the intentions for peas and 29% lower for chickpeas. The key reason for the change is that fields in some areas were too wet for farmers to finish planting crops. This is reflected in unusually high amounts of land being left idle.

Land in summerfallow jumped from an expected 6.715 million acres at the end of May to an estimated 12.49 million acres at the beginning of June, up from 11.61 million acres last year.
