August Estimates "Subject to Change"

VANCOUVER - Aug 24/11 - SNS -- Statistics Canada's August crop report is not normally the final word on how many acres were planted each year and certainly not for the final production number for the year.

During the past five years, lentil acreage was understated by an average 1%; while the final pea area averaged 3% more than shown in August; edible beans were 3% too low; canaryseed high by an average 4%; mustard seed averaged 3% too high; and chickpeas were, on average, 16% too high in August.

One reason is that because a large percentage of the intended acreage is not planted by the time the seeded area survey was completed at the beginning of June -- the August report is effectively the first seeded area estimate of the year and the June report a revised seeding intentions.
