Firm Finish For Peas

VANCOUVER - Aug 5/11 - SNS -- Field pea markets finished the week on a slightly firmer note, regaining some of the ground lost earlier to harvest selling pressure from France and central Europe.

Yields in Europe are thought to be better than expected, but they will not make up for the reduction in seeded area, with the result total production is down over last year.

Peter Smith, president of the British Edible Pulse Association, recently commented, "June figures from France suggest that the recent rainfall was very beneficial to yields with the most recent forecast predicting an increase of 10% to 4,000 kilograms per hectare. Overall pulse acres in France were 22% down on last year with 195,000 hectares peas and 106,000 hectares of beans awaiting harvest – the latter likely to start in 3 weeks time.

"The UK crop has also responded well to the recent rainfall and yields are now estimated to be higher than last year, given good weather at harvest."
