Season Ends With Record Pea Exports

VANCOUVER - Aug 2/11 - SNS -- Bulk conventional exports of pulses and other specialty crops from Canada finished the 2010-111 marketing year on a quiet note, dropping below both month and year-earlier levels.

But, Canadian pea exporters finished the year having moved a record quantity of bulk conventional peas at 2.41 million MT, surpassing the previous marketing year record for pea exports by roughly 544,000 MT. Total movement was also about 780,000 MT above the previous marketing year.

The other part of the story for Canadian field pea exports in 2010-11 is the shift in the way peas were handled. As of July 24, farmers had sold 2.373 million MT of peas to licensed primary elevators, up from 1,612 million the previous marketing year. This constitutes a major shift in the way peas are marketed in western Canada.
