Pea Exports Ease in May

VANCOUVER - Jun 1/11 - SNS -- Bulk conventional exports of pulses and other specialty crops from Canada declined in May, dropping both month and year-earlier levels because of a steep reduction in the volume of peas exported.

Port clearances during the first 10 months of the 2010-11 marketing year have already established a new single season record at 2.18 million MT of field peas, surpassing the previous marketing year record for pea exports by roughly 380,000 MT. Total movement is now about 866,000 MT above the same period last season.

Field pea movement is starting June on a relatively quiet footing. One vessel which was intended to be loaded in Vancouver during May have slid into June; while another had been nominated to lift peas from Vancouver this month. Navigation is open in Thunder Bay, but so far there have been no vessel nominations for peas.
