Brazilian Edible Bean Output Rising

WASHINGTON - Dec 13/10 - SNS -- Dry edible bean production in Brazil is expected to rise 5% this season to 3.34 million metric tons (MT), according to the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture (CONAB).

Area is estimated at 3.6 million hectares, up 1% from last year. Yield is forecast at 965 kilograms per hectare, 6% greater than last year and well above the five-year average of 857 kilograms per hectare, reports the U.S. agricultural attache for the country.

Dry beans are cultivated in nearly every Brazilian state. However, most of the production is concentrated in 8 states, which are responsible for approximately 80% of Brazil's production, which reached an estimated 3.26 million MT in 2009 and distributed in three distinct crops (dry, wet and winter). Family farmers produce about 70% of total production.
