Third Largest Bean Crop Brewing

WASHINGTON - Oct 8/10 - SNS -- Dry edible bean seeded area in the United States ended up significantly higher than first thought, while yields are on pace to set a new national record, according to the latest USDA crop production esimates.

The net result is production is up sharply over last year in the United States, rising 29% to 32.6 million cwt (100 pound units) or 1.479 million metric tons (MT), the largest crop since the 1.5 million MT harvest of 1999 and the third largest harvest in U.S. history.

The USDA noted that total planted area is up 7% from the August 1 forecast at 1.9 million acres. Harvested area is forecast at 1.83 million acres, 7% above the August 1 forecast.

The average United States yield is forecast at 1,783 pounds per acre, a decrease of 15 pounds from the August 1 forecast. If realized, this will be the highest yield on record.
