Canadian Pea Shipments Surge

VANCOUVER - Aug 7/10 - SNS -- Surging demand for Canadian field peas from the Indian subcontinent contributed to an unusually strong finish for the 2009-10 marketing year, with total export clearances closing some of the gap which existed earlier in the calndar year.

By the time the last vessel was loaded in July, Canada had loaded 1.63 million metric tons (MT) of field peas at Vancouver and Thunder Bay, down from last season's record 1.87 million MT, but still resulting in the second best year on record for Canadian export movement.

Clearances during July set a new record for that individual month at 197,500 MT. During the final three months of the marketing year, bulk conventional field clearances inched past 532,000 MT, breaking last year's record of just under 400,000 MT of pea movement during the closing quarter of the marketing year.
