Pea Markets Remain Unsettled

PANAMA - May 27/22 - SNS -- International field pea markets finished the week's trading on a modestly firmer note over concern about about seeding progress and expectations about better than initially expected demand from the United States.

Canada started with the week with an estimated 65% of the crop in the ground, down from 92% at the same time last year. Alberta's farmers are making good progress, with 85% sown, compared to 97% last year; in Saskatchewan progress dropped from 94% complete a year ago to 66% this year; while Manitoba's farmers might only have 6% sown.

In the United States, an estimated 83% of the intended acreage has now be planted, compared to 85% last year, well ahead of the recent five year average of 78% complete by the third week of May.
