Impact Of Rising Fractionation Capacity On Trade

PANAMA - Feb 26/21 - SNS -- The impact of rising fractionation capacity in Canada and other parts of the world is becoming obvious from trade data for both starches and protein isolates.

Global exports of starches made from peas, beans, lentils, and chickpeas rose sharply during the 2019 calendar year from levels reported in 2018 even though reported imports were down significantly.

Shipments have risen dramatically in the past decade, jumping from just 35,056 metric tons (MT) in 2009 to 79,392 by 2015 and almost 225,000 MT during the 2019 calendar year.

Reported exports will be down sharply in 2020. Interestingly, recent growth in export movement of starches from pulses reflects India's participation. In the five years spanning 2014 to 2019, India's market share averaged 13%. That jumped to 65% in 2019 and could account for 58% of global exports in 2020.
