Record Pea Supply Expected

PANAMA - Aug 31/20 - SNS -- Pea production in Canada is expected to jump from 4.237 to 4.996 million metric tons (MT) this year as higher average yields more than offset a modest decline in seeded area.

The biggest yield gains are expected in Alberta, jumping from 2,065 pounds per seeded acre last year to a record 3,098 this year. By contrast, yields in Saskatchewan are well short of the record 2,520 pounds per acre recorded in 2013, advancing from 2,184 pounds last year to 2,241 this year.

The net result is the Alberta harvest is expected to jump from 1.686 to 2.319 million MT, while Saskatchewan's advances from 2.313 to 2.36 million. Output in Manitoba is expected to go from 163,900 to over 226,000 MT, while production in other provinces rises from 73,600 to around 91,400 MT.

The estimates are not based on a survey of farmers. Instead, Statistics Canada used satellite technology to model preliminary crop yields. The choice was made to "alleviate stress on farmers during the COVID-19 pandemic," the federal agency explained.
