India's Kharif Area Sets Record

DELHI - Aug 6/16 - SNS -- Land in pulses during the current kharif or monsoon growing season pushed into record territory during the past week, with total inching 10,000 hectares ahead of the previous high to reach 12.11 million hectares.

By the end of July, India's farmers have normally planted 70% of all the pulses they will grow during the kharif season. On average another 3.24 million hectares will be sown.

In recent years that ranged from a low of 2.23 million in 2009 to a high of 3.62 million in 2011. last year, farmers planted 3.32 million hectares from the beginning of August through the middle of October.
