Late Monsoon Slows Kharif Seeding

DELHI - Jun 17/16 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's kharif season made good progress during the past week, with lad in all crops advancing from 7.13 to 8.42 million hectares, according to the country's agriculture department.

The delayed arrival of this year's monsoon has had an impact on seeding progress, with land in all crops down from this time last year and well below the recent five-year average of 10.4 million hectares in the ground by the middle of June.

Land in pulses is also down from last year, dropping from 453,000 to 332,000 hectares as of June 17. On the other hand, progress is ahead of the recent five-year average of 312,000 hectares by this time.
