Saskatchewan Optimistic About Yields

REGINA - Sep 10/15 - SNS -- Saskatchewan Agriculture is more optimistic about this year's yields than most market participants and Statistics Canada.

With the exception of chickpeas, the latest provincial yield estimates by Saskatchewan Agriculture were higher than Statistics Canada. If the provincial forecasts are accurate, Canada will produce 3% more peas and lentils; 29% more canaryseed; 25% more mustard, but 24% fewer chickpeas.

The latest yield estimates from provincial crop reporters comes at a time when the pea and lentil harvests are nearing completion. Saskatchewan farmers have harvested 92% of this year's pea crop, compared to 85% of the lentils, 13% of their chickpeas, 15% of the canaryseed and 45% of the mustard grown in the province.

Progress slowed in some areas during this past week because of heavy rain last weekend. "(It) has delayed producers in many parts of the province. Warm and dry weather will be needed to help fields dry," Saskatchewan Agriculture said.
