No Progress Reducing Backlog

VANCOUVER - Mar 18/15 - SNS -- Canada's railways are still not making progress on decreasing outstanding orders for hopper cars from field crop shippers in western Canada, according to the last data accumulated by the Ag Transport Coalition.

During the week ending February 16, the railways supplied 27%, or 1,823 of the 6,861 hopper cars ordered for delivery that week. This compares to 29%, or 2,111 of the 7,304 hopper cars ordered for delivery the previous week.

The actual number of cars spotted at loading facilities in the country was 5,743 cars, including 3,066 for CN Rail and 2,677 for CP Rail. The total included 3,920 cars which were ordered in prior weeks. Since the start of the 2014-15 marketing years, each railway has spotted an average of 3,600 cars per week.

Since the start of the marketing year, the two railways have not supplied 23,929 hopper cars ordered by shippers for a shortfall of 11%.
