Railways Not Catching Up on Back Orders

VANCOUVER - Mar 3/15 - SNS -- Cars supplied to shippers during the week ending February 9 remaining far short of the number ordered by shippers, according to the last data accumulated by the Ag Transport Coalition.

During the week under review, the railways supplied 32%, or 2,798 of the 8,693 hopper cars ordered for delivery that week. This compares to 33%, or 2,604 of the 7,756 hopper cars ordered for delivery the previous week.

The actual number of cars spotted at loading facilities in the country was 3,581 for CN Rail and 2,985 fr CP Rail, but that total included 3,408 cars which were ordered in prior weeks. Since the start of the 2014-15 marketing years, each railway has spotted an average of 3,600 cars per week.

Since the start of the marketing year, the two railways have not supplied over 24,488 cars ordered by shippers for a shortfall of 11%. The report said the fact the percentage of outstanding orders has remained around 10% for several weeks indicates the railways are "not making up ground..."
