India Pulses Duty Exemption

VANCOUVER - Sep 26/14 - SNS -- The Indian government extended the duty-free exemption for peas, dry edible beans and lentils until March 31, 2015. The exemption for chickpeas was only extended until December 31, 2014.

Importers in India had been fearful the government would not extend the current exemption, which expired on September 30.

Fears the import duty exemption would not extended stemmed from reports pulses were considered an inessential commodity with respect to imports. There was never any concern that imports would not be allowed, but that policies would be changed with the goal of raising the landed price of pulse imports in order to encourage greater domestic production.
