China Experiences Pulse Trade Deficit

VANCOUVER - Sep 20/14 - SNS -- China is reporting a growing trade deficit for pulses in the face of rapidly growing domestic demand for field peas by the country's food manufacturing industry.

In 2012, China exported over 260,000 metric tons (MT) more pulses than it imported. Last year, imports exceeded exports by nearly 220,000 MT.

Exports fell because of last year's dry edible bean crop failure. China was a net exporter of pulses during the first half of the 2013 calendar year, but that was offset by a precipitous drop in shipments during the last half of the year.

Dry edible bean production recovered this year In China, with the result the country's trade deficit in pulses is unlikely to be as wide as suggested by trade data for the first half of the year.
