Slow Harvest Progress in Saskatchewan

REGINA - Sep 18/14 - SNS -- Saskatchewan's harvest made slow progress during the week ending August 15 because of cold and wet conditions across much of the province, according to the latest update from the Saskatchewan Agriculture's weekly Crop Report.

Only 23% of the 2014 crop has been combined, well behind the recent five-year average of 43%. Another 43% of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Harvest is most advanced in the southwestern region where 31% of the crop is now combined. Only 27% is combined in the northeastern region; 26% in the southeastern region; 24% in the west-central region; 19% in the northwestern region; and 11% in the east-central region.

Disease and weather-related quality issues remain a concern in many areas. Of the crops that have been harvested so far, 71% of the field peas are estimated to fall within the top two quality grades while 61% of the lentils and 79% of the durum is estimated to fall within the bottom two quality grades. While overall yields are reported to be about average, they vary from region to region.
