India's FH 2014 Pulse Imports Rise

VANCOUVER - Sep 18/14 - SNS -- India's net pulse imports were up 5.7% during the first half of the 2014 calendar year, reaching 1.5 million metric tons (MT), according to trade data available in the Platinum edition of STAT.

Imports of all categories of pulses advanced from 1.63 to 1.66 million MT, while exports fell from just over 181,000 to almost 132,000 MT. Pulse imports for the entire 2013 calendar year ended up at 3.55 million MT, rising 11% from the 3.2 million imported during 2012.

Gains in net pulse imports are taking place during a period when official production has reached record levels. This is one of the reasons many pulse traders in India believe the actual pulse harvest is much lower than official crop estimates.

Most export activity is in kabuli chickpeas. Exports of other pulses is largely banned. Field peas are the most important pulse imported by India, reflecting the fact it is also one of the most economic pulses available on world markets. Mung is the second most important pulse being imported by India this year, followed by lentil, pigeon pea and chickpea.
