Smaller U.S. Barley Crop

WASHINGTON - Jul 11/14 - SNS -- The 2014 U.S. barley crop is forecast at 187 million bushels, down 13% from 2013, according to the USDA 's latest crop production estimates.

Based on conditions as of July 1, the average yield for the United States is forecast at 71.2 bushels per acre, down 0.5 bushel from last year. Area harvested for grain or seed, at 2.63 million acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast but down 12% from 2013.

When compared with last year, yields are expected to decrease throughout much of the United States due to drought conditions in the Pacific Northwest and wet conditions in the Midwest and Northeast. Conversely, adequate moisture in the northern and central Rocky Mountains have lead to expected yield increases in Montana, Utah, and Wyoming.
