South African Bean Output Down

PRETORIA - Feb 28/12 - SNS -- dry edible bean production may be up slightly from last year if yields improve enough to offset this year's drop in seeded area, according to the last crop estimates from the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

Farmers in South Africa were more interested in growing corn and soybeans than other summer crops, with corn area rising 13% to 2.682 million hectares, while land in soybeans rose 12.9% to 472,000 hectares.

There has been a general decline in pulse plantings in South Africa in recent years, despite industry efforts to get farmers interested in growing the crop. Area peaked at 77,950 hectares in 2000-01, but has never been over 56,200 hectares since that time.
