Beans Maintain Firm Tone

VANCOUVER - Feb 25/12 - SNS -- International dry edible bean markets maintained their firm tone through the past week against continued buying interest from Mexico.

So far, a total of 150,000 metric tons (MT) of duty-free import quotas have been issued by the Mexican government, which is working to cover a massive shortfall in its domestic harvest.

Mexico recently cleared the way for beans to be imported from Bolivia, Brazil and Colombia. At that time, the U.S. agricultural attache for the country said approval for direct imports from those three countries "clearly coincides with the new TRQ (tariff rate quota) of 50,000 MT (metric tons) of dry beans open to countries outside of NAFTA and Nicaragua."
