Edible Bean Crop Down a Third

WASHINGTON - Aug 11/11 - SNS -- Dry edible bean production in the United States is expected to reach 20.451 million 100 bags (cwt) or 927,559 metric tons (MT), down 35.4% from 1.842 million bags or 1.442 million MT last year.

The USDA resurveyed seeded area in some states because farmers were not finished planting crops when this year's seeded area estimates were compiled in June. This resulted in little overall hange in total U.S. plantings of dry edible beans, with area inching up from 1.258 million to 1.265 million acres.

Harvested area is forecast at 1.19 million acres, down 35% from the previous year's harvested acreage. One of the more significant changes in the forecast harvest conditions is in North Dakota, where the USDA predicts farmers will only harvest 90.5%, down from 96.3% last year.
