Smaller South Africa Bean Crop

VANCOUVER - Jul 26/11 - SNS -- Forecast dry edible bean production in South Africa is down from initial expectations and well below recent output levels for the country, according to the latest crop report from the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

The reduction in edible bean production will increase the country's need to import light speckled beans from China, which also expects a smaller harvest this year. It will also limit the ability of South African exporters to market product to regional markets.

Looking at other crops, SAGIS said sunflower seed output will be 5.32% higher than expected at 821,970 metric tons (MT) from 642,700 hectares. Soybean production is expected to total 708,750 MT from 418,000 hectares; while South Africa expects to harvest 78,695 MT of groundnuts from 55,150 hectares; and 173,250 MT of sorghum from 191,900 hectares.
