North America Faces Edible Beans Shortfall

VANCOUVER - Jul 1/11 - SNS -- The USDA's dry edible bean seeded area estimates for the United States were somewhat surprising because of the large amount of farmland which is not expected to be planted in North Dakota this year.

By some estimates, North Dakota farmers will be unable to seed 6.5 million acres of farmland. All regions of the state are affected, but the biggest impacts are in the northern crop areas of the state, especially along the Canadian border.

The area across the border in Canada has also been unable to finish seeding this year's crops. For the second week in a row seeding progress in Saskatchewan remained at 82% complete. Thunderstorm activity during the past week kept fields too wet to enter.
