Dry Bean Area Down One Third

WASHINGTON - Jun 30/11 - SNS -- Dry edible bean plantings in the United States are expected to end up at 1.26 million acres, down 34% from last year United States and just below their original intention to plant 1.3 million acres, according to the USDA's seeded area estimates for 2011.

Harvested area is forecast at 1.21 million acres, 34% below the previous year. Planted area is expected to be lower in 16 of the 18 estimating States. It is important to note that seeded area was not broken down by class.

In North Dakota, planting of the crop began in mid-May, about two weeks behind the 5-year average. As of June 12, planting was 75% complete compared with 94% last year.

Dry bean planting was underway the first week of June in Michigan and 59% was planted by June 12. This is ahead of the 5-year average of 46%. In Minnesota, moisture levels in the northwest region of the State, where most of the dry beans are grown, have been reported to be as much as three inches above normal.
