South Africa Expects 4% Smaller Bean Crop

VANCOUVER - Mar 24/11 - SNS -- Dry edible bean production in South Africa will likely decline almost 4% this year as a steep drop in seeded area offsets improved yield forecasts.

The South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS) is looking for production to come in at 50,520 metric tons (MT), down from last year's 52,255 MT harvest.

More importantly, production is well below last month's initial forecast that this year's harvest could total 53,200 MT. A declining yield trend is not welcome news to a sector which has been unable to meet its longstanding goal of producing at least 75,000 MT of beans a year.
