Mexico's Bean Import Volumes Improving

WASHINGTON - Mar 19/11 - SNS -- Dry edible bean production in Mexico is expected be down from last year as farmers switch to high income crops, according to a recent report by the U.S. agricultural attache for the country.

Growers traditionally plant their spring-summer harvest from March to August and harvest it from September to March, noted the U.S. agricultural attache. "Weather, given that over 75% of Mexico's bean area is rain-fed, continues being the predominant crop factor.

"As in the past, the 2010 spring-summer crop cycle is expected to account for approximately 70% of total edible dry bean production with the remainder coming from the 2010-11 fall-winter crop cycle. According to official preliminary information, dry bean production increased by over 3.5% during the 2010 spring-summer crop cycle, compared with same crop a year earlier."
